TCP Performance with Segment-in-Flight Estimation Algorithm over Wireless Links

چکیده
TCP performs reasonably well over the Internet where packet losses are mainly due to network congestion. However, TCP suffers significant throughput degradation over hybrid wireless/IP networks where packet losses are also due to transmission errors in wireless segments and during mobile host handovers. In this paper, the micro-scale behavior and packet-level performance of four popular TCP variants over wireless links are assessed, and a heuristic Segment-in-Flight Estimation algorithm for TCP senders is proposed and evaluated. Extensive simulations confirm that the enhanced TCP is more robust against packet losses, can achieve better end-to-end performance, and still keeps the fairness and compatibility with ordinary TCP variants.

Enhanced bandwidth estimation algorithms in the TCP congestion control scheme
The use of enhanced bandwidth estimation procedures within the congestion control scheme of TCP has been recently proposed as a way to improve the performance over links affected by random losses. In this paper we propose TIBET (Time Intervals based Bandwidth Estimation Technique), a new bandwidth estimation scheme that can be implemented within the TCP congestion control procedure by modifying...
متن کاملTCP with bandwidth estimation over wireless networks - Vehicular Technology Conference, 2002. Proceedings. VTC 2002-Fall. 2002 IEEE 56th
The Time Intervals based Bandwidth Estimation Technique (TIBET) is a proposed change to the TCP congestion control algorithm which performs a run-time sender-side-only estimation of the bandwidth available to the connection. TIBET uses the estimated bandwidth to allow TCP sources to achieve higher performances both over wired and wireless networks, avoiding overly conservative rate reductions i...
متن کاملEffect of Local Retransmission at Wireless Access Points on the Round Trip Time Estimation of TCP
The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has been mainly designed assuming a relatively reliable wireline network. It is known to perform poorly in the presence of wireless links because of its basic assumption that any loss of a data segment is due to congestion and consequently it invokes congestion control measures. However, on wireless access links, a large number of segment losses will occu...

متن کاملDeriving Fast Recovery Probability as a Performance Measure of TCP SACK in Wireless Links
In this paper, we would like to study the analytical model of Transmission Control Protocol – Selective Acknowledgement (TCP SACK) by deriving its fast recovery probability in wireless links. Recently, there exist several variants of TCP, for instances Tahoe, Reno, New Reno, Vegas, Westwood and SACK. TCP Reno is the most popular TCP implementation in the Internet today. Reno’s fast recovery alg...
